Getting into the Game

  1. Most intro/crack screens can be skipped with FIRE or SPACE BAR (on the keyboard)
  2. Most in-game onscreen manuals can be skipped with the RUN STOP key (on the keyboard)
  3. If the game seems to hang when loading, turn ON or OFF the TRUE DRIVE EMULATION settings located in Options->System–>True Drive Emulation or by changing the settings on Apply Quick C64 Settings.
  4. Some games sit on a title screen until you press the FIRE button
  5. If a game won’t load, try changing from C64 NTSC to C64 PAL at Options->System->C64 Model or by changing the settings on Apply Quick C64 Settings.
  6. Some games require C64 borders to be turned on for timing, etc. Enable these at Options->System->Video->Border Mode
  7. If you have .PRG files, rename them to .D64 and C64.emu should accept and run them fine.

Controlling the Game

  1. If the onscreen controls don’t seem to work, try changing the SWAP JOYSTICK PORTS from ON to OFF or OFF to ON. This is located on the main menu.
  2. If the controls on the screen are too small, make them bigger at Options->Input->On-Screen Config->Button Size
  3. Some games use both the joystick, fire button AND keys on the keyboard. Get familiar with opening the keyboard (KB button) and closing it.
  4. Many games use common keyboard controls like SPACE BAR, F1, F3, F5, F7, ENTER and a few others. For the best results, use a multi-button controller like an 8-Bitty or Nyko Playpad (iCade controllers work great) and remap those keyboard stokes to unused buttons on the controller

Issues While Playing

  • If the game runs too fast or too slow, try changing from C64 NTSC to C64 PAL at Options->System->C64 Model (if a game seems too fast, try PAL; if too slow, try NTSC) or by changing the settings on Apply Quick C64 Settings.
  • If you have sound issues (like on the Skate or Die title screen) try changing the SID engine from FastSID to ReSID at Options->Audio->SID Engine
  • To swap discs, hit the triangle in the upper left and get back to the main menu. Select ROM/Disk/Tape Control and choose Disk #8 – then select the disc to change to. Return to the game.

Specific Games Issues

Note: These notes are for the versions of the games found in the Essentials + Games Pack above. Other versions may vary. Not every game has been tested yet and this list will grow. Games are tested as C64 NTSC, TDE related options OFF and Swap Joysticks set to ON.

Most games can be made to run by using the Apply Quick C64 Settings off the main menu.

    1. Archon: If you appear stuck on the loading screen, hit the FIRE BUTTON. The first trainer option is a Y or N answer – use the keyboard.
    2. Back to the Future 2: Change settings to C64 PAL, and turn off all TDE settings or use Apply Quick C64 Settings #4
    3. Badlands: C64 NTSC settings, turn off all 3 TDE settings or use Apply Quick C64 Settings #2
    4. BagitMan: C64 NTSC settings, turn on all 3 TDE settings (Apply Quick C64 Settings #1), toggle Swap Joysticks to OFF.
    5. Barbarian: Make sure you enable the in-game fastloader when prompted.
    6. Beach Head 2:  PAL + TDE is required to make this game run.  I believe it needs Swap Joysticks On too.
    7. Bionic Commando: Fix the graphics glitches by using C64 PAL settings Apply Quick C64 Settings #4.
    8. Demon Stalkers: At the title screen, hit SPACE BAR and BE PAITENT. It will eventually work. There is no way to speed up this process. Use a save state to avoid having to load this again. The scenario disk is Disk 2. See ISSUES WHILE PLAYING above to learn how to swap floppies.
    9. Dig Dug: Swap Joysticks set to OFF.
    10. Elevator Action: Apply Quick C64 Settings #4
    11. Into the Eagle’s Nest:Apply Quick C64 Settings #4
    12. G.I. Joe: Apply Quick C64 Settings #1
    13. Gyruss: Swap Joysticks set to OFF.
    14. Little Computer People: Apply Quick C64 Settings #1 and WAIT. It is a LOOONG load time.
    15. Q-Bert: Swap Joysticks set to OFF.
