Shield Help Chat Room

I’ve moved the chat to IRC (irc.freenode.net) in channel #shieldhelp. Since IRC isn’t the staple it once was, the browser interface below will allow you to visit this channel without a special program or any registation.  If you want to be a more power user or a more permanent member, consider using a dedicated client like mIRC or X-Chat.  Learn more about IRC and Freenode here.

There is no one in the channel!

This is a very new channel and it will take time to get users in there.  You can help out by “loitering” and helping others if no one else is around.  I am normally loitering there as ShaneRMonroe.  I try to constantly watch the channel, so if I don’t see you right away, hang tight.  Spread the word!

How do I change my nickname in the channel?

Type in /nick <your new nickname>

… Freenode allows nickname registration, so if the nickname is registered/in use, you’ll be disallowed to change./

How can I register my nickname so I can always use it?

Type in /msg nickserv REGISTER <password> <email address>

You will get an email address telling you what to enter to confirm your registration.

After you’re registered, you can use that name forever and no one else can.  When you sign in, use the USE PASSWORD feature or /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password

  1. I’m having an issue with getting full root access on my shield tv pro. After rooting I check it with root checker app and it says that the supersu binaries aren’t installed. It does say that I have root access but if I don’t have the binaries installed my root apps won’t work as they should. What do I do?

Hi I just got the Shield Android tv yesterday but when I plugged my seagate 8tb to it, it wouldn’t read it. I also installed Es File explorer and it only showed that a usb drive was connected but i couldn’t open it. Do you have and suggesstions? Should I reformat the drive from, use a smaller hard drive ( i have a WD 2tb)? THanks in advance.

I have heard of issues with bigger hard drives. 2TB should be okay though. Did you get this solved?

Always format WITHIN the Shield OS when possible. That sucks if you have a giant drive full of stuff already – but you may have to do the format then copy the files back on.

      • Updated to 5.0 for shield tablet k1. Had several issues while doing the update. No bootloader animation? Update didnt go well. Wasnt recognizing nvidia charge cable and charging at .2amp rate. Factory reset clean user data but that was all it did. Tried to do a reboot. Turned power off. Turned power on but no response to power on. Screen didnt turn on. Tried over and over for about an hour. Finally came on and looked like it must have been doing the update without showing that it was doing it.
Already noticing several issues with rendering. Fps is down. Tried to lower setting to 1080 in app optimization-on custom and got a 1/4 sized window for the app. Boundaries for screen size setting incorrectly. Ran antutu and 3d is down and fps never could get above 19.xx on medium or high quality. I was already struggling with fps and getting some “jitter” before update with fps running 60 in 1080 and fps 40 to 45 in 1920 setting. Lower settings caused aspect ratio issues with the game app before so havent tried lower setting since uodate yet.
Cpu test result slightly better, but everything else is down a little and ram is down 1500 points.
Disabled all the bloat i can and background services running and optimized everything i could think of the same as before but didnt help. Antutu results lisyed are after optimizing. Before optimizing it was even worse.
Thinking i need to go back to ota 1.5 but 5.0 is new recovery image. Or nv and vulkan need to work on some things to get system working better. Could i use the 1.0 factory image to flash back to it and then flash 1.5 update? I am not rooted by the way. I have just been using stock and optimizing theough user settings and dev ootions. Dont know what i should do. Really want to be able to use sbield tablet but have always struggled to get it to run the game i play correctly. Oh and running it on the lcd screen not through hdmi. Or should i just go ahead and give up on shield and run custom rom? Doesnt seem like things are getting better. Sorry still noobish and still trying to learn all of the advanced development. Never actually done a root user or custom rom yet, just researched it all.

Some people claim they have rolled back from Nougat. But I’m creeped out by it since Shield TV people who have tried to roll back have bricked their machines. This complex question may be better served over at XDA. I can help out in most regular cases, but these niche scenarios may be better left to the Level 2 guys 🙂

    Hi! I have a problem.
I have an Nvidia Shield Android TV (2015).
I download an official rooted shield rom 3.4 and flash it to shield very well. Then update to shield experience 5.0.1, then 5.1. But yet i can’t root it.
    I try this method:

    1. adb devices

    The answer is:
    04218150620170000117 device

    2. adb reboot bootloader

The shield is loaded the bootloader (unlocked)

    3. fastboot devices

    The answer is:
    04218150620170000117 fastboot

    4. fastboot boot recovery.img

    The answer is:
    downloading ‘boot.img’…
FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error))
    finished. total time: 5.021s

Then the shield is rebooted automaticaly.

I try all of usb ports, and other usb cables, but nothing.

(In device manager i have one unknown device, when the shield is on android. When its on fastboot mode, the unknown device is gone)

    What can i do?

    (Sorry for my bad english..)

Permission denied, it’s strange what Permission i didn’t get promoted with anything on my PC. I have enable Developer mod and everything else that was done in that video.

other small problems, it doesn’t say twrp-3.1.1-1-foster.img it just says twrp-3.1.1-1-foster
but look at this in file it has that .img

  5. My Nvidia Shield TV says:

Hi can someone help I have full Android OS on the 2015 shield TV 16gb it has 6.0 I would like to go back to stock but I don’t know what stock recovery image to use 5.2 or 6.1 any ideas thanks

  6. xapim says:

Hi i have a shield tv 2017 16gb it came with 6.0 i rooted it without any issues then came the 6.1 OTA update when it would try to install it it would go into twrp and it would fail the install (not bothered about it anytway) so recently we had the 6.2 and surprisingly they found a way to bypass the twrp and the OTA flashed via twrp and istalled fine but as everyone should know i lost the root so i just used the same method to root it again and it worked fine so to anyone on 6.2 just to say it’s completeley rootable same procedure 🙂

  7. Kenneth Sims says:

Yesterday I was able to achieve root on my brand new 2017 16gb Shield. Then I discovered root kills the Direct TV Now app because of Google’s Safety Net https://developer.android.com/training/safetynet/index.html. After some research on the XDA site https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv I ran across the need to hide the root from the App. New problem the super user needed to be updated in order for suhide to work & well known cracker Chainfire said its a cat & mouse game regarding Google and patching, meaning your app could die once again. So here is where my nightmare started. As I’m trying to flash a newer version of Super User my device then would not go past the Android boot screen. Then after that I could not even get the device to power up at all, not even a green led. Since I just purchased the Shield last week i was able to exchange it at Best Buy yesterday. So until I know I can watch Direct TV Now on a rooted device without any issues I will not be rooting my replacement. Now I know why my Android china box would not not work with Direct TV Now as it came rooted. I did run across this but since I already got my replacement ZI dont want to push my luck.
