LineageOS available for Shield Android TV (2015 Edition)

Edit: We were bored tonight – so here is LineageOS installed on Shield TV (2015).

We are not true believers of custom ROMs on Android TV – we believe if you don’t want Android TV then another hardware box might be more suitable for your needs.  (Note: This custom rom IS Android TV still.)

However, we do constantly get emails asking about them.  Even more emails from people that have tried custom ROMs and either bricked their devices or needed specialized help in recovery.

LineageOS is a popular custom ROM for many devices (similar to CyanogenMod).  This has been released for Shield Android TV (2015 Version aka Foster).  It is NOT available for 2017 versions.

If you do decide to engage in this custom ROM, drop us a line and let us know how you fared.

Taito’s RayStorm released on Android – Play it on Shield TV Sideloaded

While not everyone’s cup of tea (and certainly not at $9.99 – $7.99 currently on sale) this is pretty cool.  I sideloaded it on Shield TV and it plays 100% with a controller – always a nice thing.

Here is some video:

No Man’s Sky, The Witness now available!

Whether you’re a brand new Shield TV owner or a proud owner of an Original Shield TV, you have two new games available for your little black box.

In The Witness, you wake up, alone, on a strange island full of puzzles that will challenge and surprise you.

You don’t remember who you are, and you don’t remember how you got here, but there’s one thing you can do: explore the island in hope of discovering clues, regaining your memory, and somehow finding your way home.

The Witness is a single-player game in an open world with dozens of locations to explore and TONS of puzzles. This game respects you as an intelligent player and it treats your time as precious. There’s no filler; each of those puzzles brings its own new idea into the mix. So, this is a game full of ideas.

The Witness is available from the Google Play store for $19.99 ($20 off the Steam price).  Get it on Google Play, check it out more on Steam.

Inspired by the adventure and imagination that we love from classic science-fiction, No Man’s Sky presents you with a galaxy to explore, filled with unique planets and life forms, and constant danger and action.

In No Man’s Sky, every star is the light of a distant sun, each orbited by planets filled with life, and you can go to any of them you choose. Fly smoothly from deep space to planetary surfaces, with no loading screens, and no limits. In this infinite procedurally generated universe, you’ll discover places and creatures that no other players have seen before – and perhaps never will again.

No Man’s Sky is available for $59.99 on GeForce NOW and includes a digital key for Steam.  Check it out at NVidia or on Steam.

NVidia at CES 2017: Shield? VR?

Tonight NVidia will do a keynote for the Consumer Electronic Show at 6:30pm PST.  They released this trailer.

We see some VR action going on but no company logos are visible on the headset – nor are any wires visible.  Could we be getting NVidia’s own wireless Gamestream technology?  Could the Shield brand be adding VR to its stable?

GeForce NOW technology is hinted along with a brief look at a guy playing Mad Max presumably on a smaller NVidia Shield TV (but using the old controller?).  We may get our answers tonight.

We’ll have our thoughts here after the presentation.

GoNNER released for Shield Android TV

Following a successful launch on Steam, GoNNER comes to Android – exclusively on Shield Android TV.  Available now at at the sale price of $6.69 (33% off the regular price of $9.99).  Watch our 10 minute video then click the link below to get your copy now!

GoNNER is a tough as hell score-based procedurally-generated platformer with roguelike elements. GoNNER is also a story about friendship between Ikk, Death, and a space whale named Sally.

You will die. A lot. This is by design, but it’s not made to feel unfair. You’ll eventually get the hang of GoNNER, so don’t lose your head. But even if you do it’s okay cause we have a lot of replacement heads you can use.

  • DAILY CHALLENGES! Only playable once a day. Levels are randomly generated but in this mode everybody plays the same world and use an identical loadout. Everything resets at midnight (Swedish time, UTC+1). Can you crush your leaderboard foes?
  • PROCEDURALLY GENERATED! Every time you play the game the levels will be different and present unique challenges and opportunities.
  • UNLOCKS! You’ll be able to choose from a variety of passive and active abilities at the beginning of each run so be sure to experiment with all of them and find the play style that best suits you.
  • SECRETS! Secret areas exist in the world of GoNNER, and these areas will get you different items that you can then always use from the beginning of each run. We’re not going to tell you how you get to these areas or what the criteria is for even finding them because secrets, duh.
  • LEADERBOARDS! Kill creatures, get combos, score points, and brag to your friends how much better you are than them.
  • MUSIC! It’s really freaking good.

Good luck.

NVidia Shield Indie Spotlight: New Games on GeForce NOW

A little late on this news, but figured “better late than never”…

NVidia is pleased to announce the release of several unique indie games today on SHIELD. Lumo, Lumini, Poncho, Cloudbuilt, and Syndrome are all available in the GeForce NOW store, and you can grab them at significant discounts for a limited time. And they will be adding Aragami very soon.

Let there be more videos!

I’m backed up on videos, so I figure I better just dump them all – screw the branding!  There are over 10 new videos including native Android apps and GeForce Now streaming.

Visit NVidia Shield Zone’s YouTube channel (don’t forget to subscribe and share!) – videos will be coming online over the next several hours

Pinball Arcade now playable (more or less) on Shield Android TV

One of the VERY absent titles supporting Shield Android TV has been one of my favorite games on the Android platform; Pinball Arcade.

With today’s build, most UI elements are properly mapped to the controller!  There are a few UI glitches here and there – and some initial set up items you may need a mouse for.  But, once you have it set up?  You can use the controller 99%.  The holdout features are “table specific” features like Magna-Save.  They don’t appear to be mapped yet.

Still, for dozens of tables you can unleash the power of Shield Android TV and play pinball on your big screen.

Note: You’ll need to side load it.  You can directly download the APK here (it is safe – we’re hosting it).  You can also install it on your own Android device and export the APK and sideload yourself using our tutorial below:

Hitman: Absolution added to GeForce Now “Included with Membership”; plus four more to come

NVidia announced an additional wave of hit titles will soon be available to stream on SHIELD.

Starting with the release of Hitman: Absolution on Tuesday, October 4th, NVidia is adding five more Square Enix games to the GeForce NOW “Included With Membership”.

Additional titles rolling out include Thief and two more games starring everyone’s favorite spelunker, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary. And last, but by no means least, GeForce NOW will be adding the arcade hit Mini Ninjas.

The GeForce NOW library now offers more than 100 games that members can play instantly on SHIELD.

Shield Spotlight: Alpha Protocol

GeForce NOW “Included with Membership”
Single Player / Rated M / Steam Value: $14.99

This edition of Shield Spotlight we look at the espionage RPG action title Alpha Protocol.

Originally released in 2010 and developed by Obsidian Entertainment (Pillars of Eternity, South Park: Stick of Truth, Fallout: New Vegas), Alpha Protocol brings us a new slant in action RPGs; the spy thriller.

Here is a bunch of play I did on the PC …

You play Michael Thorton (voiced by the venerable Kevin Bacon) a talented-yet-ostrocized government agent.  To stop an international catastrophe, Thorton breaks ties with his organization and handle the issue himself.  Aided by various sympathetic handlers, Thorton sets off on mission after mission trying to reach the end goal.
